E-Max Crowns

E-Max crowns are made entirely from lithium disilicate, a glass-ceramic that lets light pass through it much like natural enamel. Because there is no metal inside, they look very lifelike and are a popular choice for front teeth and other visible areas. They cover and strengthen a damaged or discolored tooth while matching the teeth around it.

Is It Right for You?

Who it suits.

  • Front teeth where appearance matters most
  • Teeth that are chipped, worn or badly discolored
  • People who prefer a metal-free restoration
  • Replacing older crowns that show a dark line at the gum
Benefits

What it brings.

  • Natural translucency

The glass-ceramic reflects and transmits light in a way that closely resembles real enamel.

  • Metal-free

There is no metal to show through at the gumline or to cause concern for people with metal sensitivities.

  • Strong when bonded

Lithium disilicate is one of the stronger glass-ceramics and bonds well to the tooth.

  • Precise digital fit

The material suits digital design and milling, which helps achieve an accurate fit.

The Procedure

Step by step.

  1. 01

    Consultation and shade

Your dentist examines the tooth, discusses the look you want and records the shade of your neighboring teeth.

  2. 02

    Preparing the tooth

Under local anesthetic, a small amount of tooth is reshaped to make room for the ceramic.

  3. 03

    Scan and design

A digital scan or impression is used to design the crown, which is then pressed or milled from a lithium disilicate block.

  4. 04

    Bonding the crown

The finished crown is tried in, adjusted if needed and bonded to the tooth with an adhesive cement.

Aftercare

Looking after it.

  • Brush twice daily with a soft brush and non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss every day around the crown edges
  • Avoid biting directly on very hard things such as ice, nut shells or pens
  • Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth
Questions

Good to know.

Are E-Max crowns strong enough for back teeth?

They can be used on back teeth in many cases, but molars take the heaviest biting forces. For people with a strong bite or a grinding habit, your dentist may suggest zirconia instead.

How long do E-Max crowns last?

With good care they can last many years, in a range similar to other quality crowns. Regular check-ups, good hygiene and protecting them from grinding all help them last longer.

Can an E-Max crown be whitened later?

No. Ceramic does not respond to whitening gels, so if you plan to whiten your natural teeth it is best to do that first and match the crown to the new shade.
