Between Appointments: Tirana and Beyond

How to spend your free days while you're here for treatment2 min read

In the City Center

Central Tirana is compact, walkable and full of color. Most of the sights below are within easy reach of the center.

  • Skanderbeg Square, the city's wide open heart, surrounded by the National History Museum and the Et'hem Bey Mosque.
  • Bunk'Art, a Cold War bunker turned museum that tells the story of Albania's recent past.
  • The Pyramid of Tirana, reborn as a bright public space you can climb for a view over the city.
  • Blloku, once closed to ordinary citizens and now the liveliest area for cafés, restaurants and evening walks.
  • The Grand Park and its lake, for a quiet walk under the trees.

Up the Mountain

The Dajti Ekspres cable car climbs from the edge of the city to Mount Dajti. On a clear day, the view stretches over Tirana to the sea.

Day Trips

If your plan leaves you a free day or two:

  • Krujë, about an hour away, with its hilltop castle, the Skanderbeg Museum and an old bazaar.
  • Durrës, on the Adriatic coast, with a Roman amphitheater and a long beach.
  • Berat, the "town of a thousand windows", a UNESCO World Heritage Site a longer drive to the south.

After Surgery, Take It Easy

If you are having implants or oral surgery, plan your sightseeing for the days before your procedure or after your check-up. For the first few days afterwards, avoid strenuous activity, hot sun, alcohol and swimming.

Your dentist will tell you exactly when you can return to normal.
